Check Mate: Create a Life You Don’t Need to Escape From

“Instead of wondering when your next vacation is, maybe you should set up a life you don’t need to escape from.” – Seth Godin

First off, I do not come on the internet to be put in my place and straightened out by a quotation! This quote put me right in my place and strangely gave me inspiration and motivation to keep working toward my “crazy” goals.

How often do you hear “I need a vacation” among coworkers, friends, family, or strangers? I am guilty of it myself, especially these days. I try to be quite positive about my life and the future, but lately, I’ve found myself looking forward to the times when I can place my quite interestingly stressful job on the shelf for a week or two. Yes, a vacation is always useful for maintaining balance in life, however, yearning and counting down for the next one is an indication some thing needs to change. Starting the week just to count down to the weekend is also pretty bad too. Nevertheless, I found a new goal – create a life I don’t need to escape from.

*Note to self* It said create, not stumble upon. Check mate!

  1. I love this quote! I was actually out of work today because I was sick, yet, it felt like a vacation- lol. I am currently working on doing just that. A lot of times we feel trapped by obligations, bills, expenses, etc. So many times I just wanted to walk away and take a risk, but then, I see myself homeless and without money :-/. But, right now, I’m transitioning in phases. I’m committing to getting out, trying new things, and investing money in business ideas so that I can free my time. I’m excited and anxious to “Be There Already!” Thanks for the post 🙂

    1. Oh no! I hope you are feeling better! Trapped is a good word choice because it is exactly that feeling. I am at the same place you are. It is time to just have faith, take the risks, and not accept anything less. It’s easier said than done because of the bills and obligations, but I’m hoping that good things will come to those who work hard while they wait. 🙂 Keep me updated on your progress. We could all use a little motivation and hope every now and then! Go get ’em.

  2. This sentiment is exactly the reason why I decided to build some savings and quit my 9-5 to pursue freelance writing as a career. I’ve not read this quote until now (great quote by the way!) but after years of working in jobs that weren’t right for me, the idea that I could truly be happy and ‘myself’ only 4 weeks out of 52 every year became increasingly absurd!

There’s another good and similar one from Confucious (according to the internet anyway) – “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life”

    Thanks for a great post!
